Grounded In Joy: Why Music belongs in our healing
There are some things words cannot reach.
Music has always been one of them.
Long before I could explain my emotions, I learned to feel them through rhythm, melody, and song. A familiar chorus can transport me back to childhood. A single lyric can put language to something I have carried for years. Sometimes a song gives me permission to cry. Other times, it reminds me to shimmy, body roll, laugh, or simply breathe.
As a therapist, I often talk about healing as something that happens not only in conversation, but also in the spaces between words. Healing can happen through movement. Through silence. Through creativity. Through community. And yes, through music, always.
That's why I decided to share a monthly playlist with my Grounded Roots community.
Each playlist is created with intention. Rather than focusing on a specific genre, I choose songs that reflect the season's emotional rhythm. My hope is that these playlists become companions for your own journey, whether you're taking a morning walk, driving with the windows down, preparing dinner, writing in your journal, or simply resting.
This month's playlist is inspired by growth, warmth, sunshine, and homecoming.
After traveling to New Orleans this month to speak at a professional conference, visit my grandfather's homeland, spend time with family, and experience the Whitney Plantation, I found myself reflecting on the many ways healing connects us to our stories.
Healing isn't always about moving forward.
Sometimes it's about returning.
Returning to our values.
Returning to our bodies.
Returning to our communities.
Returning to ourselves.
Summer invites us into that kind of return. Nature reminds us that growth isn't rushed. Flowers bloom in their own time. Trees stretch toward the light one season at a time. We are allowed to grow that way, too.
As you listen to this month's playlist, I invite you to notice what resonates with you.
Which song makes you smile?
Which lyric feels like it was written just for you?
Which rhythm reminds your body that it is safe enough to soften?
You don't have to analyze the experience. Simply allow yourself to listen.
If you'd like to deepen the experience, pair the playlist with this month's journal prompt:
What parts of myself have grown quietly this year that deserve to be celebrated?
You may discover that the music helps you hear your own story a little more clearly.
Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your healing journey.
I hope this month's soundtrack brings a little more joy, warmth, and light into your summer.
Happy growth,
Chioko Juliette :)
